LyreAcademy.com - Online courses & lessons on ancient and early music - ancient lyre, phorminx, kithara, cithara, kitharis, citharis, pandura, sambuca, barbiton, chelys, bendir, tympanona

For a 3rd consecutive year, the International Lyre Summer School, a highly transformative experience, returns to Greece. But this time, it will be different, in more ways than ever before.

Under the summit of Mount Olympus, the residence of the ancient Greek gods, and with constant breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, we will gather for 7 days, diving into the world of the Greek lyre, ancient music, and the much-celebrated ancient Greek civilization.

Face-to-face lessons on the lyre, short theory shots, long practice days, unlimited opportunities for hands-on experience with many ancient Greek musical instruments, meaningful interactions with fellow lyre students from all over the world, gentle guidance by some of the most world-renowned lyre players and instructors, and deep-dives into the specifics by scholars, senior luthiers, and performers of the ancient world music scene.

And all of this, while tasting the timeless spirit of Hellenic hospitality (including the Mediterranean diet), surrounded by the warmth of Greek summer but protected by the soothing breeze of Mount Olympus.

what to expect?

An Immersive Lyre Experience

The 2024 & 2025 Lyre Summer Camps were a deeply enriching experience for students and tutors alike. Lyre enthusiasts and seekers of ancient sound from around the globe gathered in Greece for a week for lyre group lessons, one-on-one sessions, ancient Greek music theory, and philosophy, alongside late-afternoon seminars & discussions, transforming their lives as both lyre players and human beings.

The feedback from 2024 & 2025 students was overwhelmingly positive, offering valuable insights for meaningful improvements in the years to come!

We constantly want to experiment, though, and explore new and even more profound ways to introduce the healing power of the lyre to people's everyday life. This is why the 2026 Lyre Summer Camp will be quite different, keeping the highlights of previous years untouched, but making bold changes on what we truly believe will make a meaningful and lasting impact.*

What to Expect if You are a Returning Student?

Our lyre camp students have played a crucial role in shaping the 2026 summer camp. They shared meaningful insights with us on how to further enhance an already incredible experience. Below are some of the things that will be tackled to improve your learning experience further!

  • Premium Accommodation & Privacy: For the first time, each participant will have their own private room in carefully selected guesthouses, with a private bathroom, modern comforts, and full protection from heat and mosquitoes. You can even bring a friend or spouse along for a small additional cost and share the experience in comfort.
  • Upgraded Meals: This year’s breakfasts will include more variety and generous portions, while early dinners will feature expanded menus with fruits, desserts, and at least one fish or meat option every evening. Known for its exceptional cuisine, Palaios Panteleimonas will host us with the village’s top kitchen team, specially booked to cook for our group throughout the camp.
  • More Late-Night Discussions & Guest Lectures: Last year’s evening discussions were a highlight, so this year, we’re expanding them with in-depth seminars and conversations featuring key figures from the global lyre community. Being close to the SEIKILO Museum in Thessaloniki gives us access to an exceptional lineup of lecturers, affiliate artists, and ancient instrument performers, making each evening session even more inspiring.
  • 2-Day Optional Extension: After the camp, participants can join a special 2-day trip to visit the renowned LUTHIEROS workshop, explore the SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music in Thessaloniki, and spend meaningful time with the Koumartzis family—the heart behind the lyre revival.
  • Returning students: For all our returning participants, the 2026 lyre summer camp will dive deeper into intermediate and advanced lyre playing, both in theory and practice! No matter your level, you will have the chance to listen to advanced theory and see in practice how advanced lyre players can further improve their playing. In each class, our lyre tutors will focus on and prioritize questions by students with the appropriate (each time) level! By doing so, all beginner students will still have the option to get answers to questions they never thought to ask in the first place, and more advanced students will also be able to dive deeper into lyre-playing.
  • More practice with short shots of theory: Each day will begin with a short introduction to a key topic in ancient music theory, followed by 2 to 3 hours of dedicated practice. Students will be divided into two or three groups based on their level, rotating daily through group sessions with each of our tutors. You’ll have more time to play your lyre, refine your skills, and connect with others, leading up to small daily performances that build toward the grand group presentation during the Farewell Party! A shared journey of learning, music, and community.
  • We cannot control the heat, but we can increase the possibility of cooler weather. The 2026 Lyre Summer Camp will take place in September (just at the very end of the legendary Greek summer), in a higher altitude with cooler temperatures, and always the option to go swimming in the sea!

This isn’t about becoming — it’s about remembering.
In just 7 days, we’ll awaken the lyre player already within you.

Be part of the worldwide revival of the ancient lyre by gathering for the third edition of the International Lyre Summer School, held on the sacred slopes of Mount Olympus, the legendary dwelling place of the gods.

Rooted in our deep love for the lyre and our belief that learning flourishes best in community, this summer school is more than an educational event; it is a celebration of shared purpose and collective growth.

Together, we will explore the musical legacy of ancient Greece through face-to-face lyre lessons, set in a mountain village where myth, music, and nature meet in perfect harmony.

Guided by beloved lyre tutors, virtuoso performers, and academic experts, you’ll also have the chance to take part in behind-the-scenes filming with the SEIKILO Ancient World Music Channel, connect with renowned luthiers, and live, learn, and share meals alongside lyre players from around the world.

At the same time, you will have the chance to meditate daily with the lyre, open discussions on ancient Greek philosophy and modern life, and time to enjoy the beauty and rhythm of the world-renowned Greek summer.

Real Stories, True Impact

The Lyre Camps really helped me grow as a player in a short amount of time. Having attended two camps already, I am continually amazed at how much I can accomplish each time.

I find that all the teachers can break down the most difficult concepts and strategies into an achievable way. I feel challenged and want to push myself harder each time. Overall, I felt challenged, and I had fun. It has been a truly rewarding experience that I recommend to any lyre player.

Looking forward to 2026!

Jocelyn Snyder

2024 & 2025 Camp

All the tutors were exceptionally good and welcoming! Attending this camp was crucial in propelling my progress forward.

Sivan Tumarkin

2024 Camp

The lyre camp helped me learn new techniques, gain the confidence to play and a new perspective on the instrument, make new friends, and have a very enjoyable time.

Adrien Mastrosimone

2024 Camp

The instructors were wonderful, and the lessons were perfect. It was an amazing gathering of people; a diverse group, yet very accepting of one another, as if we were already a family from the very first day. I hope to return sometime in the coming years.

Ellen Zechman

2024 Camp

The lyre tutors were a great team. So different in their approaches to teaching and playing, but they worked so well together.

I learned so much about technique, history, and repertoire. I was also impressed by how they respected and appreciated what each student brought to the lyre.

I loved the Stoic readings and meditations.

Sarah

2025 Camp

I really liked the teaching styles and have learned so much: techniques, ancient philosophies, meditating with the lyre, ancient and modern music theories, and generally playing the lyre, considering I just started the lyre on the first day of the camp!

Sarah Wang

2024 Camp

I've been on a few residencies, and it seems to me that the best ones involve a strong degree of trust and bonding on shared projects and passions. This one was magical, with people attending from around the world. I miss everyone.

It was especially nice for me that my attendance was sponsored by Arts Council England!

Fiona O'Cleirigh

2025 Camp

The lyre is a lot more accessible instrument than I had thought previously. There are a lot of key features of my lyre I didn't know about, such as the movable bridge, and it was excellent being part of a community.

Devon Martinez

2025 Camp

Thank you for giving me the chance to have my first-ever practice sessions with such professionals and in such a location. I'm looking forward to continuing with you via the online courses and then onward from there!

Sean Stewart

2025 Camp

The lyre camp helped me learn different techniques for playing and gain confidence in new approaches.

Emmanuel Murguía

2024 Camp

This experience was crucial to becoming a better player. I learned things I needed to correct and improve my playing and handling of the lyre. But more than that, I feel like a more rounded person with a keener eye and ear. The fact that the lyre camp was international also provided a unique perspective from others.

This experience was deeply meaningful to me and has taken my playing to the next level. It really built up my confidence and showed me the unlimited creative possibilities of a musician.

Jocelyn Snyder

2024 Camp

Even at the age of 68, life can be a new beginning. What you do with love and mindfulness makes the strings within you resonate.

Miriam Schaffner

2025 Camp

The camp was an unforgettable, truly inspiring, and heart-opening experience that has given me lots of motivation to keep playing and creating; it also made me feel supported and like I belong to a community. All teachers and the LUTHIEROS team have a true, kind-hearted family spirit and authentic and genuine care for this project and to bring good into the world through it.

Christina Nteventzi

2024 Camp

The 1st Lyre Camp in 2024 helped me start from where I was, have fun, and try new things. It took place in a beautiful paradise, and it was an amazing success!

In the 2025 Lyre Camp, I learned that while the lyre is so simple and accessible to begin with, its richness and complexity are unlimited and depend only on the amount of time, effort, and care that one devotes to it, with the guidance of the right teachers.

The differing approaches of each lyre tutor were an assurance that each student would form their own relationship with the instrument.

Andrew Stone

2024 & 2025 Camp

The live teaching experience de-mystified many aspects of techniques that, before attending, were unknown to me. I loved how the lyre Instructors included beginners, intermediate, and advanced students in all the lessons. Beginner students get answers to questions they don’t yet know to ask.

I have wanted to play the lyre for 30 years but back then, learning opportunities did not yet exist. I am grateful for all the efforts of LUTHIEROS and SEIKILO, especially for bringing the Lyre back to Life in an age when the world can now experience the beautiful sounds and harmonies that the Ancient world enjoyed.

Sharon LeBow

2024 Camp

Thank you for creating a camp for us! I struggled with going beyond just knowing how to play existing songs and following the lessons. Now I feel I have a better foundation for becoming a true lyre player and musician.

Where the Camp will take place?

A Home at the Foot of the Gods

In 2026, the International Lyre School finds its new home on the sacred slopes of Mount Olympus, nestled in the heart of the preserved traditional village of Palaios Panteleimonas.

Our gathering will take place in a village of rare architectural charm, built at an altitude of 440 meters, offering cool, refreshing temperatures even in the peak of summer. From here, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of both the mountain’s majestic peak and the Aegean Sea below.
Stone-paved alleys, local artisan shops, and centuries-old plane trees surround the central square, setting the stage for a lyre summer school rooted in myth, tradition, and community.

You’ll stay in a warm, stone-built retreat guesthouse, a place where stone, wood, and fire come together to create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and deeply grounded.
Each room is uniquely decorated with handcrafted wooden details, evoking the warmth and intimacy of another era.

Perched on the mountainside, the retreat harmoniously blends natural beauty, simplicity, and quality, offering breathtaking views of Olympus above and the Aegean below.

This is a place where silence has depth, and music echoes far beyond the walls.

Here, we won’t just stay.
We’ll live, create, and share.
A true retreat into nature, myth, and music.

_Important: If you register with the One-Person Registration (without accommodation), rest assured; Palaios Panteleimonas offers a variety of guesthouses, and wherever you stay within the village, you'll be just a few minutes’ walk from all camp activities. Just make sure to book your accommodation inside the village, as the experience is designed around this shared, walkable setting.

Ancient World Music & Mount Olympus

Mountain Olympus has always been a welcoming place for the ancient lyre, and even from our first visit, magical things started to happen and never ended. We genuinely feel this is one of the places where the lyre belongs, as the soothing sounds of the lyre still echo throughout the landscape, even when we are not there to hear. Watch below some of the amazing moments that were caught on camera.

There is no benefit when music stands

secret and hidden.
