Muting technique: Play your lyre the ancient way
Are you ready to play your lyre the ancient Greek way? According to many depictions that survives from Classical Greece, muting technique was probably the most common way of playing the lyre. Beyond the muting technique, you will also learn basic ancient rhythms that comes from the work of Aristoxenus, along with how to play "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi, the Epitaph of Seikilos (the oldest complete ancient Greek melody) and much more.
This course is for intermediate lyre players and for lyres of any type with at least 7 strings.* It is highly recommended to first complete the beginner courses 101, 102 and 103 available also by LyreAcademy.
At the end of the course you will know how to...
- Play chords with the ancient "muting" technique.
- Play the basic chords of the harmony of western music.
- Play on the three basic ancient rhythms of Aristoxenus of Tarentum (a peripatetic philosopher and Aristotle's pupil).
- Apply this knowledge on famous tunes.
- Play "The Four Seasons" melody by Vivaldi.
- Play "The Joy to the World" traditional song.
- Play the oldest complete ancient Greek melody, called "The Epitaph of Seikilos", with the muting technique.
* Do you own a lyre with more strings? The course can be done by students with a lyre or a kithara with 7 or more strings. Simple and step-by-step videos are available to prepare your lyre for the courses (including tuning).
Lesson 1 : Apply muting technique on diatonic chords
Which is the muting technique that ancient Greeks used for chords playing? In this lesson, you will learn and exercise all the diatonic chords' positions of the muting technique.
Lesson 2 : Play chords progressions with muting technique
It's time to play some very familiar chords progressions using our newly acquired muting technique.

You will learn how to add three basic rhythms (based on Aristoxenus work) in your chord playing while using the muting technique.
